People used original items to decorate their trees such as popcorn, nuts, candy, and fruit.
Hans Greiner who was from Germany, started the idea of creating designed Christmas ornaments. He thought of the idea because he couldn't afford the original items to decorate his tree.
The Christmas ornament tradition didn't get to the United States until the year 1890.
Hans Greiner first wanted the ornaments to look like the fruits and other original items that people used to decorate their tree.
Today, the most common shapes of ornaments are spheres, bulbs, and stars.
Over the years, glass ornaments are still made, but they are making ornaments, now, out of plastic.
History of Christmas Decorations
Tinsel was first invented in Germany made from silver, around 1610.

Candy canes have been on this world for over 350 years.
The artificial Christmas trees were made around the end of the 1800s.
